OperaCréole returns to the Marigny Opera House since its 2022 “La Fête Créole” for the New Orleans Premiere of “A Bayou Legend,” a 1941 opera by Mississippi-born African American composer William Grant Still. Performances will take place June 9th through 11th.
What happens when Voodoo practices collide with conversion to Christianity? It ain’t pretty!
Set in a 20th century Creole village in the Mississippi Delta, the opera examines this subject and what happens when a wronged woman becomes entangled! Spirits, love, conversion… quite a triangle!
William Grant Still, the Dean of African American composers, composed “A Bayou Legend” in 1941. However, it was not professionally staged until 1974 when Opera/South in Jackson, Mississippi, presented its world premiere 33 years later.
Performers: Tyrone Chambers, Ashley Renee Watkins, Valencia Pleasant
